About the McCarl Center

The McCarl Center for Nontraditional Student Success supports the academic mission of the College of General Studies by enhancing nontraditional student learning and development in the college.

Each term, the McCarl Center offers a comprehensive new student orientation program, in conjunction with the University’s PittStart Program; a first-year experience (FYE) course; a variety of academic success workshops and a number of career development seminars/workshops. The Center houses offices for CGS one-stop advising; the CGS Career Counselor; the CGS Student Government and the CGS Alumni Society Board, as well as, tech stations for student use, a student lounge and a career resources library. Each term the CGS Student Government and CGS Alumni Society also sponsor a variety of student activities/events in the McCarl Center for CGS Students.

Supported by a gift from James F. McCarl (CGS ’73), the McCarl Center for Nontraditional Student Success opened in November 2002. Mr. McCarl is the president and CEO of the McCarl Group, LLC and serves on the University of Pittsburgh’s Board of Trustees. In addition, he is the president-elect of the Pitt Alumni Association (2007 – 08).
